Dayton Adrian Barber
Born November 13, 2010
5lbs 3oz 18 inch
When we found out we were pregnant and having a beautiful baby the only thing that kept me from being excited was that my due date was CHRISTMAS DAY! WHAT... I felt bad for my poor baby, the thought of him always having to share his birthday with the biggest holiday of the year. But apparently I was not the only one that felt like this....Dayton was not too excited about the idea either. He surprised us coming 6 weeks early. It was a BIG shock. Friday November 12, 2010 we went to the BYU comedy performance Humor U to watch Stephens friend Stephen Jones. We always go to his performances and it is tradition that after we go out to eat at Denny's. We went to the late performance making the late night dinner around 12am. I had not been feeling very hot all day long thinking something was different, but just thought it was another phase in the pregnancy. We got home from Denny's around 1:30 am and the way I was feeling I went straight to bed. By the time I finally fall asleep it was around 1:50 am. Around 2:20am I jumped out of bed in shock, my water had broke! All I could think was "This is not happening!" I get up and sneak out of our bedroom so I don't wake Stephen up. I had to be sure what was happening before I made a big scene out of nothing. I go grab a pen and paper, go sit on the couch and wait for contractions. They came on slowly at first. In my head I thought no this is something else, I went in the bedroom got my body pillow and grabbed a blanket went back to the couch and tried to go back to bed. Whatever this was it could wait until morning. As I laid there it was impossible to go back to sleep, my contractions were getting closer together. I continued to write them down. I could not longer relax, I was pacing back and forth in the living room trying to think what I should do next. I finally go wake Stephen up. I walk in the bedroom and shout "Stephen, I don't know what is going on. I just need you up with me right now." He pops out of bed comes in the living room with me and asks what is going on. I explain what had happened. He asked if I have been keeping track of my contractions. I said yes and pointed to the note book on the coffee table. He looks at them and starts to panic, he says "These are less then 2 minutes apart! We need to get to the hospital!" My immediate reaction is "NO, they are going to send me home." He was thinking I was crazy at this point I just kept trying to come up with excuses not to go to the hospital (keep in mind I did not think that I was really in labor. For some reason it was just not clicking with me. Also this whole time I am bawling.) I came up with my bags are not packed. Stephen with out question grabbed a bag and started packing for me, throwing in my deodorant, toothbrush, hair straightener etc. I then thought we can not go without calling my doctor. So he got on the phone and started dialing. The doctor on call was Dr. Weibell. He reaches him and explain what was going on. The doctor must have thought we were super stupid for calling and just talked us through this. He asked what hospital we were going to.... We did not even know. After telling him we were not sure, I blurt out Orem Community. He said go there and the hospital will call me once your ready. We jump in the car and start driving there. As I am still writing down contractions (don't ask me why I continued to do this) I realize I did not even know where Orem Community was! I start freaking out, Stephen calmly pulls out his phone and googles the address. And we are on our way! Heading there I have Stephen start to call my family. He reaches my mom and before we could arrange anything she said she is already on her way to meet us there. We pull up to the hospital around 3:30am not really knowing where to go, so we pull in to the emergency (Stephen has had asthma his whole life and always goes to emergency. So that is what we did) We park, run in to the emergency and get to the front desk. The lady behind the glass looked at me as I was bawling. Stephen picks up the phone to communicate through the glass to the receptionist, and tell her my wife is in labor. She gave us a funny look and says you are in the wrong spot, she told us we have to go to labor and delivery. She sends a guy out with a wheel chair. At this point I could not even walk. quickly they wheel me over to labor and delivery. When I get there a nurse helps me get into a room to check my cervix, and start my IV. meantime I have Stephen sending out a text to my sisters letting them know what is going on, from the beginning they told me they wanted to be there, so I thought I should let them know. They checked my cervix and I was already dilated to a 6cm. I kept questioning whether the baby was coming or not, the nurse turned to me and said "You are having this baby TODAY!" At that moment everything became real. I knew exactly what was going on. Took me long enough! They took me straight to a labor and delivery room, checked my cervix again (this was within a minute or so from when they checked me the first time) and I was 9cm. They had called the doctor, and since Dayton was so early they wanted to get 2 rounds of antibiotics in just to make sure everything was okay. I wanted to have him right then and there because of the pain, but once I got the epidural I could have waited WEEKS, the paid went away and I was totally relaxed. So relaxed I thought I had lost my legs at one point. I touch my legs and asked if they were mine. We ended up having Dayton at 8:59 am on November 13, 2010. He was such a sweet little spirit! I was hoping he weighed over 4 lbs being 6 weeks early. He weighed in at 5lbs 3 oz. Dayton was going to be one BIG baby boy if he had gone full term. In the end the Doctor said it was a blessing that he came early. We love out sweet little boy! He is such a great addition to our family, Stephen and I are absolutely smitten with him and love him to death!
p.s. I have been working on this post for sometime now. I am not the best blogger, it takes me awhile to finish. It is late and I am tired so I am not going through this to see if it makes any sense or spell check. So sorry if its sloppy.
